THE JIG IS UP, PUBLIC FINALLY ADMITS PAULA IS OFTEN WASTED ON AMERICAN IDOL

Paula Abdul on American Idol 4/29

I’m one of the few sports radio guys who is an Idol devotee. I like the show in spite of stupid viewers who keep less talented singers on the show.

But the real flaw of the show is Paula Abdul. I would estimate that as I’m watching, I screamed out, ” Paula is wasted” during 25% of the shows. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t watch live anymore. I DVR each episode and then fast forward when she speaks.

Her confusing gaff the other night followed by a nonsensical bumbling explanation looked like a person whacked out of their mind on something other than Coca-Cola.

COULD PACMAN BE THE NEXT CLEMENS?

Did Jones make a mistake in placing the blame on Arvell Edwards for last year’s Minnx shooting? Police have to investigate these claims by Edwards made on Newschannel 5 in Nashville….

“I feel sorry for them and everything, but I want to let them know I’m not the person who done this. I’ve been shot before. I know how it feels,” he told NewsChannel 5 reporter Amy Rao.

Documents uncovered by NewsChannel 5 reveal Jones told detectives a man he had never met before, Edwards, told him he would take care of things. Then, Jones witnessed Edwards opening fire.

Jones told police Edwards extorted $15,000 from him, telling him he needed to pay for “services rendered. I definitely didn’t receive no $15,000. I definitely didn’t extort nobody out of no money.”

Instead, Edwards said Jones “paid somebody to shoot that club up.  Now, if he wants to tell on somebody he needs to tell on himself and tell them what he actually done.”

Edwards said Jones knows the shooter well. Edwards said the shooter is part of a crowd Jones hangs out with in Atlanta.

“He knows they name,” Edwards said. “He knows they street name. He needs to tell on them instead of trying to put this on me when he knows I didn’t do this and he know I never met him before and he know he don’t know me and I don’t know him.”

Clemens is being bombarded by new daily stories detailing his womanizing. Will Pacman have his boys start flipping on him as well?

DID WSOP MONEY GRAB RUIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE FINAL TABLE?

The World Series of Poker is moving its Main Event final table to Nov. 9-10.

The champ won’t be crowned until four months after the rest of the competition? Isn’t stamina a key component of the tournament? Not anymore.

WACK’EM WEDNESDAY…KEVIN IOLE, DAN RAFAEL AND DAN MIRAGLIOTTA

April 23, 2008

It was a good show today during our weekly fight hour on ESPNRadio1100.

We got a chance to speak with Yahoo’s Iole about UFC 83, Rafael from ESPN.com about the BHop-Calzaghe fight and MMA ref Miragliotta about his fight with a fan at UFC 83 plus the Kalib Starnes marathon.

Iole highlights included him saying that..

“GSP is more unbeatable at 170 than Anderson Silva at 185″

“The judge who scored Starnes-Quarry 30-24 made a mistake, the referee should’ve penalized Starnes and taken the points away.”

“Starnes told me he had gotten grief during TUF and he didn’t want to quit a fight again.”

“Starnes labeled UFC’s contracts oppressive.”

“UFC may postpone or push back UFC 85 in London. Maybe they could move Ortiz-Machida to UFC 85.”

MMA referee Miragliotta broke down his tussle with a fan at UFC 83. He also said he was unsure if he should discipline Starnes during his fight for inactivity. As a ref working just his 4th UFC card, he didn’t know how that would fly with UFC. He said there is no provision in the unified rules to discipline an inactive fighter.

Dan Rafael highlights included that he scored the BHop-Calzaghe fight for Hopkins as did many other esteemed boxing writers, he still has Calzaghe No. 2 on the pound-for-pound list and Planet Hollywood is still committed to working with bigtime boxing matches in Vegas.

Here is the audio. I’ve placed the embedded audio on my radio station’s site. Since wordpress overhauled its backend, I can’t post my audio properly.

TSN’S MICHAEL LANDSBERG, BALLSY OR DICKHEAD?

April 22, 2008

I assume Landsberg is a huge star in Canada. He does the equivalent of the old Roy Firestone Up Close show on TSN, Canada’s ESPN.

While in Montreal I got my first look at Landsberg’s Off The Record show on Friday interviewing Dana White and talking UFC.

I like to push the envelope and ask some tough questions but this guy was pretty hard driving. There were times it felt like he was literally goading White to punch him in the face.

Watch the vids. Does he cross the line?

These are segments he calls Next Question.

UFC Dana White OTR 4/18/08

UFC Dana White OTR 2/8/08

These are additional segments that I watched on Friday. I’m too retarded to figure out how to post TSN videos on WordPress. The guys at MMAmania.com are not stupid so we’ll direct you to watch more Landsberg v. Dana over there. Here is a panel discussion as well.

Amongst the statements I found odd during the interviews…from Landsberg v. Dana

***White, “Chuck Liddell can’t go anywhere” — Landsberg, “Is that because of sleeping pills?”

***Landsberg, “Do you have major celebrities lined up for UFC 83?” — White,”You never know until they show up.” — Landsberg, “I’m assuming that to be a no.”

***Landsberg, “You’re from Vegas guy did you win any money on the Super Bowl?” — White, “I didn’t bet on the Super Bowl because I’m a Patriot fan and I didn’t think they would cover.” — Landsberg, “Then you should’ve bet against them, doofus!”

Landsberg also calls White “a former aerobics” instructor several times.

Landsberg does know his stuff (he is a bit annoying repeatedly saying Ly-dell when pronouncing Chuck Liddell). But some of his shots seemed uncalled for.

Answer my headline question…is this guy a hardnose interviewer or a disrespectful douchebag?

TSN obviously has a huge audience so White is willing to take some cheap shots. I assume my relationship with UFC may be strained if I called the president a “doofus.”

One more question, when did it become cool for guys to get lip jobs?

MAYWEATHER WILL DUCK COTTO FOREVER
It’s not enough for Floyd to force us to watch another fight against the Golden Boy, now “Money” is planning a 2009 rematch against Ricky Hatton.

How do you sell a rematch after you knocked the guy out cold and was leading the fight 8-rounds-1?

Floyd is a marketing genius, let’s see if he can convince fans to buy these fights in big numbers.

FLORIDA ATHLETES LIKE TO FIGHT

It was nice to see the Rays’ Al Reyes and the Dolphin’s Reagan Mauia getting into bar brawls this week. Reyes wins the prize for biggest jackass, he got the taser..twice!!

The Reyes details according to the Tampa Tribune..

Reyes fell against a ceramic pot inside the bar. Thinking someone had pushed him, police said Reyes began exchanging words with patron Eduardo Mora.

Mora then punched Reyes in the face, getting the attention of the Hyde Park Cafe’s bouncers. Meanwhile, police said in a news release, Reyes “began to spit blood on the people in the area and began to swing his arms about.”

The bouncers tried to control Reyes, but the 6-foot-1, 240-pound right-hander kept pushing them away. A Tampa Police officer working extra duty at the bar stepped in and yelled, “Stop Police!,” but Reyes “continued spitting blood and thrashing about,” according to a police incident report.

Moments later, the officer warned Reyes he was going to Taser the pitcher, and he did, knocking him to the bar floor. Ignoring police commands to stay down, authorities said Reyes got up and was Tasered a second time.

Meanwhile Mauia got nabbed by those pesky kids with a cellphone camera. After apparently punching some guy in the face and driving off…

“Mauia asked the victim, Michael Gianatassio, what the f— he was looking at,” the affidavit states. “Gianatassio said he wasn’t looking at anyone. Mauia became upset and said, ‘You should know,’ as he approached Gianatassio. All of a sudden, Mauia punched Gianatassio in the face with a closed fist.”

In the Reyes case, you almost wonder why the off duty police officer intervened. I’m sure after saving the 38-year old lard ass from a bouncer beatdown, he’ll have Reyes suing him for using the taser.

Henderson police are dealing with a situation after trying to save a family from offing itself. The suicidal hubby contributed to his wife’s death after a routine traffic stop.

O’REILLY KNOWS ALL

Once Bill has his agenda set, there’s no guest in the world that he’ll actually listen to who brings an opposing stance to the table.

O’Reilly twisted facts and simply did not listen during an MMA discussion last year with UFC president Dana White and fighter Rich Franklin.

Here, he rolls MMA into a discussion that tries to paint the picture that CBS is lost. “MMA experts” Bernard Goldberg and Jane Hall are brought into the discussion to back O’Reilly’s opinion.

BAY AREA IS PISSED ABOUT TRENT JOHNSON LEAVING

Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby has some ‘splaining to do about his coach Trent Johnson bolting for LSU. Tim Kawakami says there better be a good explanation of Bowlsby should be fired.

Jon Wilner’s blog predicted this would happen three weeks ago.

Meanwhile here’s Wilner’s early speculation on who could get the Stanford job.

One name mentioned by a Stanford source (who had not spoken to Bowlsby) was Brad Holland, the former UCLA star and San Diego coach — remember, Bowlsby plucked Harbaugh from USD.

Holland is a good coach who’s used to working with academic restrictions and has tons of west coast recruiting connections. He brought in all the players that took San Diego to the WCC title and first-round win over UConn.

But I’m not sure how easy a sell Holland would be for Bowlsby: Lose the Pac-10 coach of the year, bring in a man who (rightly or wrongly) was dismissed by USD last spring.

St. Mary’s Randy Bennett? Perhaps.

San Diego’s Bill Grier? Maybe.

Gonzaga’s Mark Few? If you’re Bowlsby, you have to make the call.

New Mexico’s Steve Alford? Bowlsby hired him at Iowa.

RED SOX NATION MOST EFFEMINANT FAN BASE IN THE WORLD

Why the Boston fans love “Sweet Caroline” so much is a mystery to me. Now they’ve demanded Neil Diamond come to town to entertain them. He will do so according to bizofbaseball.com

In the midst of the World Series champions Boston Red Sox’s season opener yesterday, and during the eighth-inning sing-along of “Sweet Caroline”, the video board displayed Neil Diamond where it was announced he will be performing live in concert at the Fenway on Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 as part of his 2008 World Tour.

Since 1997, Diamond’s 1969 hit “Sweet Caroline” has been pumped from the speakers at Fenway Park during every Red Sox home game. Since 2002 it has become a tradition in the middle of the eighth inning and embraced by Red Sox fans.

ANDERSON SILVA, YOU’RE NOT FIGHTING ROY JONES…THE ODDS SAY SO

March 27, 2008

fightodds.jpg

We have laughed uproariously on the air about the rumored Jones-Silva fight.

Boxer v. MMA star!!

Won’t happen.

The concept of Silva stepping into Jones’ domain to box the all-time great is like me challenging Stephen Curry to a jump shooting contest. Can I shoot? A little. But I would be a 1000-to-1 underdog to beat the Davidson guard.

Silva isn’t that bad…but a 28-1 dog in boxing, is pretty pathetic. Funny enough there are enough dumbasses who bet on Silva that the line dropped to 25-1. Of course, they’re truly idiots with a takeback of just +1250.

Good tip from fightlinker.com

YAHOO PARTNERS WITH UFC ON PPVS!!

February 22, 2008

Huge news from Yahoo. Ever wonder why you can’t watch pay-per-views online? Now you can.

This is groundbreaking. Expect boxing to follow suit. It could also be huge boost for smaller MMA promotions who can’t get clearance on cable or satellite.

This from Yahoo:

Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization today announced Yahoo! will be the new online distributor for UFC live Pay-Per-View (PPV) events, via Yahoo! Sports. Fans can view the next UFC event, UFC 82: PRIDE OF A CHAMPION, on March 1, 2008 at http://www.sports.yahoo.com/ufc82.

“This relationship with Yahoo! is an important step for the UFC to build its global distribution platform for live pay-per-view events,” said Dana White, UFC President. “We are looking forward to working with Yahoo! Sports to expand our reach and bring the sport of mixed martial arts to fight fans in every corner of the world in every possible language.”

ANDERSON SILVA TOO BORING TO COMMAND BIG DOLLARS?

February 22, 2008

You watch Silva’s KO of Tony Fryklund and it does have the WOW factor. But can Silva’s work in the Octagon alone drive him to the top of the heap salary-wise? I’m starting to think there’s no shot.

We’ve seen Silva before several fights now with UFC. It’s the same thing everytime. Pure boredom.

Is it a language barrier? Do the translators do a terrible job? Or does Anderson just not get it? Nice ALL THE TIME doesn’t sell.

We covered the Bernard Hopkins-Joe Calzaghe press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday. Both guys got up and said they’d kick the sh*t out of the other. Hopkins is flashing his executioner sign and slashing the throat.

They spoke for three minutes combined and the juices got flowing:

“Bitch, I’m going to make you cry,” Hopkins told super-middleweight world champion Calzaghe.

“Hopkins is a bully, simple as that,” said Calzaghe. “I’m not intimidated by him, I just find it funny that a grown man like him carries on the way he does. Let’s see who’s doing the talk after the fight.”

It was interesting when someone yelled, “Get them in the Octagon.” I then heard the same fans say, “let these guys fight Kimbo, Tito, Liddell,” etc. I never heard Silva. Can Silva ever reach the casual MMA fan without some pre-fight pizazz?

Below are some of the questions for and answers from Silva during the UFC 82 teleconference. It’s mind-numbing.

Some examples..

1. Silva/translator, “He respects Dan Henderson and it’s going to be an honor to fight him”

2. Question: Nogueira submitted Henderson, has he given you some tips?

Silva/translator, “He’s been training me a long time, nothing on Dan.

3. Silva/translator, “You have to be focused on what you want and you’ll achieve.”

4.  Question: If you fought your clone what would happen? What’s the key to beating your clone?

Silva/translator, “It’s better just to think about it. It’s not reality. He doesn’t know how he would do.”

Jesus! When you’re afraid to break down a fight with yourself for fear of pissing off the opponent (YOU!!!!!!!!!), there’s something wrong.

LISTEN FOR YOURSELF:

Winning comes first. Money and asses in the seats matter too. If Silva is the best “pound-for-pound” in MMA, this pay is little short of that title.
