PHONY ARGUMENTS…WHAT’S WORSE WHITLOCK OR THIS ESPN “HEATED” DEBATE
Doesn’t it seem like Jason Whitlock only writes about race now. He also loves to go against the grain and side with whitey. I’m the first guy to admit many of the NBA’s popularity issues of the past 10 years revolved around white america and it’s biases. But Whitlock’s take that the NBA is back because it’s cleaned up its visual image is silly..
**No one wants to watch Delonte West or Larry Hughes play basketball. It’s uncomfortable and disconcerting. You don’t want your kids to see it. You don’t want your kids to think they should decorate their neck, arms, hands, chest and legs in paint. You don’t want to waste time explaining to your kids that some millionaire athletes have so little genuine self-confidence that they find it necessary to cover themselves in tattoos as a way to mask their insecurities.
**You just want to watch basketball and feel like you’re watching people you can relate to a little bit, people you somewhat respect.
**The dress code and the age limit have helped.

WHY IS AMERICAN PIE’S JASON BIGGS HANGING AT REHAB?
Next week is the big one!!! Can you feel the excitement? Rick Reilly, the J.D. Drew of the media, starts his downspiral on The Leader. Reilly is a solid scribe but does he have any shot to actually earn his $3.4 million a year salary? Track his TV and radio appearances. I’m saying he’s somewhere between Roy Smalley and Howie Schwab. Who got a worse deal…ESPN or the Red Sox with Drew ($14 mill/yr)?
The only thing worse is the fact that CBS is on the hook for $39 million with Katie Couric. The savior just turned in the lowest ratings in network television.

PITTSBURGH SPORTS TALKER FIRED…WHY?
ESPN1250 in Pittsburgh dumped Mark Madden for his Ted Kennedy remarks..
“I’m very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated.”
The first response from many is, “he crossed the line and community has spoken.” Is that right? Check out the message boards from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette…
When you listened to Mark Madden you knew what you were getting. Sure he was offensive at times but you always had the choice of not listening. The Ted Kennedy comment was very unfortunate on Madden’s part. He knew what he was saying when he said it. Had he stuck to sports I bet no one would care.
Frank, Union City PA
Mark Madden was in the sports entertainment business. The second word is imperative. Mr. Madden was and is an entertainer. With a vast knowledge of sport and the ability to make us laugh, become angry, or experience any other series of emotions, Madden could at least invoke something interesting in each of us (or play devil’s advocate) which is better, or more interesting, than the ra-ra talk elsewhere
John Jefferson Hills
It’s disappointing to read Mark has been canned (even though we knew it was just a matter of time). Not only because he brought SATIRE to sports radio, but because ESPN radio has been exposed as the “Stepford Wife” of the Disney corp. Let’s be honest, he wasn’t fired because of the Kennedy comments – he had made too many disparaging comments about ESPN itself lately.
At last you finally got rid of this creep. He’s a disgrace to sports talk radio and to Pittsburgh. Every time I came back to the Burgh I couldn’t believe he was still on the air.
I haven’t always agreed with everything Madden has said, but this firing is a little ridiculous. Obviously, this was an offensive remark. But I find it very ironic who the other party is. Ted Kennedy has made an entire political career of offensive, and even bigoted remarks.
Mark had something no other radio personality had..personality. I am sure he will be picked up by someone soon and I will listen again. If you didn’t like it you didn’t have to listen. Just the same I don’t like ESPN radio now .. So I will not listen.
The real reason that Mark Madden was fired is because of his relentless criticism of ESPN for not hiring him, instead of Mike Tirico. He has on numerous times claimed Tirico was his inferior and that he was the man for the job.
Read the entire comments section, see how negative remarks about Madden you can find. Looks to me like the community wants ESPN management fired.
Dan is quickly becoming a fan of MMA. He talks about the CBS debut of MMA with a card this Saturday night. I disagree with him on this one. But his points are well explained…
If this is, indeed, the most important card in the history of the sport, wouldn’t it be nice if it actually had some of the best fighters and best representatives of mixed martial arts?
Anderson Silva, B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre display what MMA is all about. Not menacing scowls and WWE-like personas, but unreal athletic ability, disciplined training and tremendous intelligence from fighters as multi-skilled as they are fearless.
If one of them were on CBS, it would force America to realize what MMA really is. Kimbo, who taps into our primal instincts, plays to what many think the sport is. Let Kimbo cash every check he can – good for him – but he plays to MMA’s difficult-to-shake reputation as “human cockfighting,” as Sen. John McCain once branded it.
How many of these stupid headlines will we see tomorrow and Saturday leading up the Kimbo card? This from the Chicago Tribune….
The story has little to do with that headline. Clearly, another Indy 500 and French Open fan is working the desk of a soon to be obsolete newspaper sports staff.
Sorry Pete, you had your time to tell the truth throughout the 90’s. It’s too late. This gem from the Dan Patrick Show. Rose says he bet 2k a game, only on the Reds.
“It was like $2,000. That’s it,” Rose said in the interview. “And it didn’t change — because I know you’re going to say, Well betting’s all about pitching and stuff like that — I didn’t care who was pitching for me or who was pitching for the opposition. I just made it easy for the guys making the bets and just bet this much every game and that’s the way we did it.”
I don’t see why we should believe anything Pete says at this point. Does anyone truly think a degenerate gambler of Pete’s level wouldn’t bet against his team too?

TRUTH COMES ABOUT SEX AND THE CITY CHICKS…THEY WERE WHORES!
Who got paid to do this research? Someone from the Daily News combed over the 94 episodes of the HBO show to see how many partners the 30 and 40-something broads bedded..
We did the math, punched in some numbers and calculated that during the course of 94 episodes and six seasons, the women of “Sex and the City” hit the sheets with a combined total of 94 men and one woman.
Perennially chic newspaper columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her three cohorts picked up waiters, doormen, trainers, lawyers, yoga instructors, bartenders, writers, baseball players, ophthalmologists, Realtors, artists, architects, furniture designers and unemployed actors.

Using the MMA expertise exhibited by Robin Leach, Abowitz writes this gem…
Of course, next time, I can always just buy a ticket and go blog about the UFC event. But that might not be necessary. UFC’s moment may be passing anyway. Ortiz, the league’s biggest star, now is done with UFC, and the league is facing increased competition.
On his blog, Leach also reports about speculation on the future of Ortiz and for White’s UFC: “Will Tito join a rival Mixed Martial Arts league or retire and how will White take on his more bitter rivals in the XC Extreme Sports league that starts its CBS TV network coverage next Saturday night from Newark, New Jersey. If a ratings success I am reliably told three further fights would be broadcast live from Vegas.”
And, of course, network fights on CBS are likely to get many more viewers than pay-for-view and cable fights. That would begin to make UFC obsolete even as it approaches mainstream status. When I first wrote about a UFC fight in 2006 that league was bringing unprecedented attention to mixed martial arts. But maybe now it is time for the next big sensation. I wonder if XC Extreme Sports requires select press to sign a credential application?
Wow, what a clown. Let’s start with Tito Ortiz is the league’s biggest star…really?
I do believe that Elite XC will do very well in the ratings on CBS. And that means more exposure on network TV. That’s if the organization can pull itself out of a horrible financial hole. Plus anyone, who’s followed this stuff knows UFC will get a network TV deal when it wants. It’s not a matter of, if but when.
If you’re wondering why Abowitz sounds like a vindictive pansy, apparently he got the run around in trying to get credentialed for UFC 84.
One local journalist who covered Saturday’s Ultimate Fighting Championship card at MGM’s Grand Garden Arena wrote me an e-mail, offering this impression: “UFC attempts to be more controlling than other sports. UFC sounds like it’s trying to hem in media.”
We were discussing his experience as well as the credential application that UFC demanded that I sign to be approved to cover the fight. The application specified everything from the trivial, forbidding my wearing certain clothes, to the ridiculous, controlling where and when I was allowed to write about the event forever more. In explaining this bizarre credential application that most would call not an application but a contract, UFC events manager Diann Brizzolara wrote me: “We have the right to protect our brand and how coverage taken from our events is disseminated.” Actually, UFC does not have that right to control “how coverage taken…is disseminated” at all. This rather unique privilege in fact is what the credential application is trying to give them a back door claim to having. Brizzolara continued, “Other sports leagues, such as the NFL, have similar regulations printed on the back of their press passes.” Two points: Similar isn’t identical, and regulations on the back of a press pass are a wish list because they do not require my signature of agreement. Oh and the obvious, the UFC is no NFL.
Interestingly, in another e-mail, Brizzolara also wrote to me defensively that the UFC credential application was “actually reviewed by our COO (who also has a law degree).” Huh? Who is the COO’s client: UFC or media?
I give him credit, it is volumonous. That said, it looks like much of it is third party bullsh*t.
He let someone pull out the shovel in his reporting on the Dana v. Tito UFC 84 post-fight presser.
The headline alone is stupid
I was there. There were L.V. Metro Police in the presser. But I don’t think anyone there felt like Tito and Dana were coming to blows at any point.
Let’s be picky. More from Leach’s sh*tty blog…
Former porn-queen Jenna Jameson told her fiancee Tito Ortizto “stay put” when UFC officials ordered him out of the post press conference of UFC 84-Ill Will at midnight.
The drama with Tito and Jenna was around 10:15p. I know this as I was going on with my live post-fight show at 10:25p.
At the midnight press conference Tito complained that White had turned the UFC fighters into “slaves” while White retorted that Tito “wanted to be a star and not a fighter.”
Instead of reading Leach’s quotes you can simply go here and listen to the audio of all the Dana-Tito interplay.
Leach goes on to discuss Ortiz’s future. He may want to get the rival organization’s name correct before we believe his “scoop” that Elite XC is coming to Las Vegas….
Will Tito join a rival Mixed Martial Arts league or retire and how will White take on his more bitter rivals in the XC Extreme Sports league (????????????????) that starts its CBS TV network coverage next Saturday night from Newark, New Jersey. If a ratings success I am reliably told three further fights would be broadcast live from Vegas.
I laugh at this whole story. I understand that Leach is speaking to a different audience but don’t skew the facts this badly. Leach reports on the UFC 84 post-fight presser as if it happened in the backroom of a bar somewhere in Sin City.
Dipsh*t, there were 75+ media members writing, recording and taking video of the happenings.
In fact, here is how it went down on video.
Tito Ortiz Post Fight UFC 84 Press Conference
The sad part is that the L.A. Times Vegas blog ran with Leach’s account as fact. Rich Abowitz adds more drama to the story….
Here is one possibility: if credentialed, I would have been there this weekend to view the after-fight press conference fight. According to Robin Leach’s blog, that press conference turned into such a fiasco with such vitriol and chaos that the police were called and “UFC officials immediately ended the press conference.” Eventually order was restored and the press conference resumed.
What the f*ck? When did this happen? I must’ve missed when the UFC “ended” the press conference.
This is a good one from The Sports Pig. Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa reportedly flipped out on ESPN’s Laura Lane. Lane writes on her blog..
Her daughters – ages 5 and 2 – are sitting next to her on the bench looking at their mom as she screams.
“F- you! How dare you write about me and my daughters and their schedule! You didn’t say you were writing an article! F- you! You f-ing bitch. You have no journalism ethics! F- you! You bitch – ”
Bryant isn’t happy that Lane critiques her clothing and behavoir during Laker games…
Kobe’s wife, Vanessa, has opted to make her own fashion statement. Vanessa, who is usually prim and proper in all black has decided to have fun tonight with her outfit. She’s wearing a white tube dress, a purple tutu, black leggings, high heeled short boots and a rhinestone incrusted white leather jacket with the number 8 on the back, Kobe’s old number. Bryant’s daughters, Natalia and Gianna both have shirts that say “Got MVP?”
“When he changed his number I didn’t have anything with a 24 on it so I had them make this dress,” Vanessa says. “I don’t know how to sew that well so I just told them what to do.”
She’s insane. Everyone knows it. Perhaps she’s angry at the world because there were rumors today that came out that Kobe Bryant slept with a Lakers cheerleader – a hotter version of his wife who is also named Vanessa – and she got fired.
While I am completely against cheating, can you honestly blame Kobe if he didn’t want to sleep with that???
Considering there are a lot of rumors going around, I’m sure she’s upset. So she took it out on me and now I have an awesome story.
THAT WAS A FOUL
I love arguing whether Brent Barry got fouled. The refs have called these playoffs like pussies the entire way. If they were consistent, that call is made and Barry goes to the line for three free throws.
San Antonio columnist Buck Harvey writes that the Lakers deserved a break on the final play…
That was the last time the Lakers were in San Antonio for the playoffs. Then Tim Duncan threw in a leaning jumper for the lead — and Derek Fisher and 0.4 followed.
This time — with Fisher again involved — one bad call deserved another.
This time the refs didn’t see that a Fisher jumper had grazed the rim, not resetting the shot clock. This time the refs chose to look the other way when Fisher leaped and landed on Brent Barry.
This time the Lakers deserved what they got.
They clearly outplayed the Spurs.
JOEY CRAWFORD WAS THE CREW CHIEF? WHY IS HE STILL WORKING THE PLAYOFFS AFTER THE DEBACLES OF THE LAST FEW YEARS?
The conspiracy theorists are howling in San Antonio. I don’t think they’re right but who the hell knows. Crawford imploded last year. Is it beyond belief that he still holds a grudge and lets emotion get the best of him during some NBA games?
Crawford was suspended late in the 2006-07 season after he tossed Tim Duncan from a game for laughing at him from the bench on April 15, 2007, in Dallas. He was reinstated for this season and remains one of the league’s highest-rated referees. A veteran of 31 seasons, Crawford has worked 38 NBA Finals games, more than any active referee. His 266 playoff games worked heading into this playoff season makes him the most experienced active playoff referee.
PITTSBURGH TALKER PAYS HEFTY PRICE FOR OVER THE TOP REMARKS
We pointed out on Tuesday that Mark Madden was a bit out of control last week on his Steel Town radio show. Now he may lose his job. He’s waged public wars with Pittsburgh sports figures for year but it looks like he cross the line in his comment about Ted Kennedy.
Madden said the following about Sen. Kennedy, who days earlier had been diagnosed with brain cancer: “I’m very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated.”
Madden works for one of the few owned and operated station in the ESPNRadio family. An independent station may not have jumped as quickly. I’d like to see him given another shot.
JIM NANTZ, ANOTHER MILLIONAIRE SPEWING MISINFORMATION
Another out of touch TV guy is pontificating about the blogosphere. Nantz threw out this gem during a recent interview on MSNBC.
I have to admit, I’m so far out of the loop on the blogosphere, I really don’t partake in that. I know that it’s got a huge following. On the few occasions that I have gone or been introduced to it and checked out what’s been written, maybe about my world, it’s usually so vile and vicious that I shut it down after a minute or two.
There’s no stopping it. The scary thing is how much credibility someone lends to that. How much credibility do we give to people out there who aren’t trained in journalism and then try and masquerade as someone who can pass along information as factual.
Upon reading about it, I was glad there was a firestorm about it. I really appreciated Buzz Bissinger — I read he was a little ashamed of his level of anger — but I completely understood where he was coming from.
Nantz was so interested in the topic he did admit he couldn’t carve out the 90 minutes to actually watch the CostasNow show….
MSNBC: Did you follow the discussions that came out of the recent “Costas Now” show on sports media–
JN: I read about it.
As out of touch as Bob Costas, Nantz may be more so. He is a blue-blood with a golfing background. Sorry bro, don’t really care about your thoughts on what average joe sports fans enjoy and don’t enjoy.
THE U.S. SUCKS AGAIN..WE HAVE MICHELLE AKERS, BRAZIL HAS LAISA ANDRIOLI
I would assume the Brazilian team is damn good in women’s soccer.
If not, who cares with great athletes like the 20-year old Andrioli on it’s side. You can click here for the rest of the photos (ABSOLUTELY NSFW).
