During all the love Kevin Love got during his swatfest, anyone notice how many times it appeared he was pounding an A & M player? It wasn’t just Love, Shipp appears to have hacked as well.

OREGON FATHER IS A DOUCHEBAG

Be proud of yourself. Way to use your son as a doormat for some publicity. Armando Navarro punished his son for being overzealous at the Oregon-UCLA game. This nugget was found in SI’s Letters to the Editor.

DAN WETZEL TO BE DISCIPLINED?

Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel is in trouble with the Vegas Chamber of Commerce after derogatory remarks about our beautiful city. After hearing about the Long Island deejay who was disciplined for saying Mastic, L.I. was trashy, Wetzel has some explaining to do for his hurtful anti-Vegas jokes.

UNLV-Kent State finally started and CBS has already shown the Rebel cheerleaders three times.

There is no truth to the rumor that the UNLV cheerleaders wear stiletto heels, are all named after cities in Texas and constantly make the pep band play “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” And no, there is not a new team member named “Kristen.”

But let’s remember these are real students. After all, a couple of them have already lined up summer internships at Crazy Horse Too.

Jardine is sitting tight waiting for the UFC to tell him who is next. We didn’t see the Liddell-Rua rumor until after the interview. Sorry.  In a very candid moment, Jardine said Marquardt choked against Silva.

LOUISVILLE SID LOOKS LIKE A DOUCHEBAG…WILL PITINO’S PROGRAM BE HIT WITH PENALTIES?

November 27, 2007

College sports information directors often play the role of fire fighter.

When controversy arises, they have to stand out front and spread lies to cover up. Louisville b-ball SID Kenny Klein attacked Las Vegas gossip columnist Norm Clarke and got caught lying while doing so.

According to Norm, Cardinal forward Juan Palacios was hanging out at the Luxor’s LAX on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. The issue at hand is whether Palacios was taking advantage of bottle service purchased by the Louisville’s director of basketball operations.

Remember Rick Majerus bought his Utah kids meals and the Utes were placed on three years probation. This from CBSSports.com back on 1/28/04:

Utah was placed on three years’ probation by the NCAA last summer after an investigation confirmed several minor violations, including meals Majerus bought during meetings with players. The NCAA rule has been changed to allow for such meals as long as each one is documented.

And if there is no issue with who was purchasing drinks for the 22-year old, why such a vehement denial from Klein?

Looks like they chose the wrong journalist to call out.

This from Monday’s Las Vegas Review Journal:

Kenny Klein, the school’s sports information director, called it a “completely erroneous report” and added, “we have people crying for lawsuits.”

Klein confirmed that first-year assistant coach Walter McCarty, a former NBA pro, was at LAX nightclub at Luxor late Wednesday/early Thursday, but he was by himself and “had a drink there.”

Louisville defeated UNLV 68-48 earlier Wednesday night.

However, McCarty was not with players and he was not drinking Patron tequila and Veuve Clicquot champagne, the spirits mentioned in the sightings item, Klein said.

“Bottom line, I know they got cameras all over those casinos and pictures don’t lie. I guarantee you that there’s none of our players in that casino at that time,” Klein said Friday.

He’s right about photos not lying. We checked and found Louisville player Juan Palacios among the photos posted on the local nightclub Web site, Napkinnights.com.

Our sources say McCarty and Palacios were in the LAX nightclub’s VIP section early Thursday with several male friends, including a young white man who appeared to be a seven-footer. Palacios, 22, is injured and has not played this year. Sixth-ranked Louisville lost to unranked Brigham Young University on Friday, 78-76.

A bottle of $400 Patron was charged to an Eric Scott’s credit card, I’m told, and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, which goes for about $300, was paid for in cash.

The school’s basketball media guide lists an Eric Scott as director of basketball operations.

DOES RICKY WILLIAMS WANT TO PLAY FOOTBALL? BEWARE:LUTHER WRIGHT DIDN’T WANT TO PLAY HOOPS

November 16, 2007

Ricky Williams, diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, is giving football another go. Maybe it’s time to admit Ricky has a football body with a mind that has no interest in the sport.

I’m here in Newark. A stone’s throw away from Elizabeth High School. With Ricky’s return, it has me thinking of former New Jersey high school hoops phenom, Luther Wright.

Wright was a 7-foot-2, 265 pound man child who led Elizabeth H.S. to multiple state title in late 80s. He went to Seton Hall and was eventually drafted by the Utah Jazz.

His life looked set when he signed a $2.5 million contract.

In recent years, he’s ballooned to 400 pounds and has often been homeless.

I’m not saying Ricky Williams is headed toward this kind of tragedy but this Luther Wright profile back in June is a real eye opener.

ADD ANOTHER KID TO THE COFIELD “ROOT AGAINST” LIST

I’m a vindictive jerk when it comes to college recruiting and my school Rutgers. I hate seeing Jersey kids leave to go to a powerhouse. In many cases, these kids get buried and never get the playing time they could’ve gotten at a lesser program.

6-foot-7 Quintrell Thomas made his college decision and chose to go the big boy route. Check the report here at Zag’s blog.

It’s a double-whammy. Living here in Vegas for 11 years, I could’ve dealt with Thomas spurning RU for UNLV. Instead Thomas dissed both schools for Kansas.

I’m sure Bill Self will only recruit 3-4 McDonald’s All-Americans over Thomas at SF/PF!

Alex Galindo was the most recent N.J. native to try Kansas. He lasted one year at KU and is now starring in the bigtime at Florida International.

RONNY THOMPSON’S LAWYER TALKS TO SNR’S COFIELD…MATT KEISER TALKS ABOUT THE BS AT BSU

August 18, 2007

BSU Assoc. Athletic Director Ken Brown

Matthew Keiser from Arnold & Porter spoke for the first time on national radio about his client’s case against Ball State.

This site was the first to name Ken Brown as the possible accused associate A.D. who was stated to have used the n-word in describing the basketball coaching staff to a compliance officer. Keiser talked about the allegations.

Keiser talked about Ball Sate reporting false secondary violations:

“The university actually wanted them to go along with university’s story. They said we need to file these secondary violations. Admit that that you were in the weight room and in the gym, all you’ll get is a slap on the wrist. Everyone will go on and we’ll just file it. The coach and his staff refused to lie.”

“There is hard evidence of (A.D.) Tom Collins and (compliance officer) Kyle Brennan trying to coerce Ronny and his staff to going with the story and cop a plea. We have documentation and other things like recordings of them saying, go along with this, just swallow the pill. Everything will be fine. It doesn’t matter what the truth is. We believe you weren’t in the weight room.”

Keiser addressed the racial issues:

“Ronny is alleging that he made valid complaints to claim a racially hostile environment and that BSU failed to take prompt corrective action. It’s the administrators that he’s complaining about, not the school or Muncie.”

“There’s no one in the media refuting that Ronny was told to lie about the NCAA infractions. No one is refuting that Ronny made the school president aware of Ken Brown’s statement (used the n-word in reference to Thompson and the staff) and did nothing about it.”

There were also claims that Ronny Thompson wrote the racist notes himself: “A hate crime happened on June 24th. The police are still investigating. (Thompson writing the letters) is absolutely ludicrous. I’m his attorney. I called the FBI and asked them to investigate this hate crime. How stupid would I have to be to have them start snooping around if my client wrote the notes?”

Ball State grad Jason Whitlock states Ronny Thompson is a liar, lacks courage and that the Thompson family cussed him out

August 16, 2007

whitlock1.jpg

We broke our version of the Ball State – Ronny Thompson controversy on Monday in conjunction with Mike Wilbon’s piece in the Washington Post.

We found it interesting that the Ball State alum chose not to write the story.

While filling in on the Jim Rome Show, Whitlock gave his take on the BSU-Thompsons rift. In an eight minute rant, he came off defending his alma mater about 80% of the time.

He repeatedly made references to Thompson lacking the courage to overcome the obstacles in Muncie, In. And he focused his convo mostly on the dysfunctional BSU athletic department and failed to point out to the national audience any of Thompson’s specific examples of a hostile racial atmosphere.

Thanks to FoxSportsRadio1460, the Jim Rome Show and Premiere Radio for the audio.

Whitlock spoke of Thompson’s poor attitude and how it rubbed people the wrong way at Ball State. He claims that the young coach “big-timed” him in their first face-to-face meeting and many others along the way.

According to sources close to the Thompson’s, Ronny felt he was never welcomed with open arms. Rarely was he invited to booster/alum functions.

Whitlock says Thompson treated boosters poorly and made lots of enemies within the BSU administration.

Whitlock says Thompson had a poor attitude and brought the treatment on himself.

We explained in the Monday story how Thompson walked into a fractured athletic department from the get-go.  The Athletic Director Collins was hired from the outside in January of 2006 which left two embittered candidates still working in the department. Those administrators along with women’s volleyball coach Randy Litchfield seemed to be on a witch hunt to snitch on Thompson and his coaches at every turn.

Whitlock really seemed stuck on the fact that Thompson is coming off as whiny and gutless. Here he makes his first reference to Thompson lacking courage.

Whitlock says Thompson should’ve fought through and that Thompson stains himself by quitting.

Whitlock explains blacks often deal with racism in the workplace. Thompson lacked the guts to fight through it.

Oddly enough, Whitlock never explains the racist claims and how serious they were in nature.  There are certainly different levels, correct? He never specifies this during his rant.

Whitlock says quitting and running was a mistake. And if Thompson had told him about the story back in March, he would’ve covered it.

This is where Whitlock’s timeline is screwy.

He’s right the athletic department in-fighting and backstabbing was something Thompson could’ve mentioned.

The 2nd set of violations didn’t come out for nearly two more months. Then came the racist notes and the tape recording of a compliance officer claiming that one of the associate A.D.’s used the word nigger in a conversation. How would Thompson have an inkling of what was to come down the pike after the Final 4?

Whitlock also says he was yelled at by the Thompsons. He says several other writers turned this story down.

We’re not sure how many writers turned it down but we hear Bill Rhoden was one of them. We’re not sure of the reasoning behind Rhoden doing this or exactly why Whitlock did.

Whitlock has always been willing to go against the grain and point out injustice. Is his status as a BSU alum clouding his view or did he read this correctly from the get-go?
